I know, I know. Hey, I said I know! I have been away again. I can’t help it! I have been working on our family tree and it just sorta keeps sucking me in. I will start my day thinking today I am writing a post! Then I get an email that will suck me right back into the family tree. Today I received 6 emails that had I opened, I would not be writing this post. It is just fascinating to trace the branches back and discover your roots. Yesterday I found two rather sad facts way down a branch. First, I found a death certificate for a 19 year old distant relative from my father’s side. The cause of death? Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the heart. Isn’t that incredibly sad?! The second thing that I found, also on my father’s side, was a murder. A woman was brutally murdered by her husband and get this – It happened in front of their children! Those poor kids! They had to be scarred for life. How incredibly sad.
Well, for this post I thought I would tell you about the movies and TV shows I have been watching and then give you one of my delicious no churn ice cream recipes so you can enjoy them together. I have to be honest here though, I’m a little behind on my watching so I hope that you will find a new movie or show to see. I think I will copy and paste a little snippet of the movie or show so you will know what it’s about. Okay, let’s begin!

Fried Green Tomatoes : I watched this one the other night. It is an older one but a good one. It is one of my Aunt Paul’s favourites. She likes to say that she’s an old soul and so she likes watching the scenery and the simplicity of the old times. Cathy Bates is pretty young in the film but still great! TAWANDA! lol I have seen the movie before but it was fun watching it again. Here’s a little blurb about it…
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American comedy-drama film based on the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. Directed by Jon Avnet and written by Flagg and Carol Sobieski, it stars Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Mary-Louise Parker. It tells the story of a Depression-era friendship between two women, Ruth and Idgie, and a 1980s friendship between Evelyn, a middle-aged housewife, and Ninny, an elderly woman. The centerpiece and parallel story concerns the murder of Ruth’s abusive husband, Frank, and the accusations that follow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fried_Green_Tomatoes
Atomic Blonde : I really enjoyed this movie! Charlize Theron was great in this. Beyond the action and great acting, the soundtrack is phenomenal! I’m probably aging myself by saying that but I have to say, I really don’t care! I found myself humming along with many of the songs! Of course if I had a voice, I would have been singing along! Yeah, I’m that geek! lol
Atomic Blonde is a 2017 American action thriller spy film based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, which revolves around a spy who has to find a list of double agents who are being smuggled into the West on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The film is directed by David Leitch, in his first solo directorial credit, and it is written by Kurt Johnstad. The film’s cast includes Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, and Toby Jones. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Blonde
Justice League : Have you seen this movie? I really enjoy movies that come from comic book characters. Or, Graphic Novels… Sorry UG for calling it a comic book. Hee hee! The problem with watching this movie when I did? My nurse showed me a few movies and I decided between Justice League and Batman VS Superman. Now, those of you that know what movie I should have chosen, I say this… Why didn’t you tell me!! For those of you that don’t know what I am talking about here, there’s an order to watch. I chose wrong. At least I had already seen Wonder Woman and Aqua Man… Thanks Fiona for recommending Aqua Man!! Boy, that man is HOT! Anyhoo, I watched Justice League one night and the next I watched Batman vs Superman. The second night I understood what was happening in the movie I watched the night before. Don’t make my same mistake and you will be great!
Justice League is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is the follow-up to 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).[5][6][7] The film is directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, and J. K. Simmons. In the film, Batman and Wonder Woman recruit The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg after Superman’s death to save the world from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_League_(film)
Arrow – The Series : I love this show but probably not for what you’re thinking. First I would like to send out a sincere thanks to my beautiful friend Fiona!! Man, thanks for suggesting that I give this show a shot. The main character is one of the best pieces of man eye candy out there in TV land! On top of all of the eye candy, it’s a pretty entertaining show. I leant my DVD of season one to one of my nurses’ and she also thoroughly enjoyed it! We are wicked girls! lol
Arrow is an American superhero television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, a costumed crime-fighter created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, and is set in the Arrowverse, sharing continuity with other Arrowverse television series. The series premiered in the United States on The CW on October 10, 2012, with international broadcasting taking place in late 2012 and primarily filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Arrow follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who claimed to have spent five years shipwrecked on Lian Yu, a mysterious island in the North China Sea, before returning home to Starling City (later renamed “Star City”) to fight crime and corruption as a secret vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_(TV_series)
The Magicians – The Series : I have been really enjoyed this series so far. I just finished I’m fourth season which is all that is available on DVD. It is full of millennials who have better vocabularies then an English Professor at an Ivy League University. I usually hate when shows are like that but I will say that the characters and storyline have sucked me in. This fourth season really had great music too! Again, I would have been singing along if I had a voice. Yeah, I know! I’m a geek. Okay, I admit it, I love musicals! Not that The Magicians is a musical but the fourth season sure had some singalongs!!
The Magicians is an American fantasy television series that airs on Syfy and is based on the novel of the same name by Lev Grossman.[2] Michael London, Janice Williams, John McNamara, and Sera Gamble serve as executive producers. A 13-episode order was placed for the first season in May 2015, and the series premiered on December 16, 2015, as a special preview.
In February 2018, the series was renewed for a fourth season of 13 episodes, which premiered on January 23, 2019. In January 2019, Syfy renewed the series for a fifth season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magicians_(American_TV_series)
Poldark – The Series : As you can tell, I have a wide range of likes when it comes to movies and TV shows. This show is an amazing love story set back when times were much simpler and at the same time, much more difficult. What stands true even in these times is human behavior and our search for love. I have always loved stories set in the times where Kings and Queens ruled and peasants made the best of what they had. I always have thought that those times were romantic even though there were much more to struggle through. Maybe I am an older soul then my Aunt Paul?! She likes movies that are set in the early 1900’s and I’m aiming for the 1800’s or earlier. What do you think? Hey, maybe I had a past life back then. Ha! I was probably the peasant girl foolen around with the boys in the barn! lol
Poldark is a British historical period drama television series based on the novels of the same title by Winston Graham and starring Aidan Turner in the lead role. The series was written and adapted by Debbie Horsfield for the BBC, and directed by several directors throughout its run. Set in the late 18th century, the plot follows the titular character on his return to Cornwall after the American War of Independence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poldark_(2015_TV_series)
Alright, enough of that. Let’s get to ICE CREAM!! Homemade, no machine required ice cream! If you have never made your own ice cream this way, you are going to thank me after you do. There is nothing better than this, I tell ya! I will give you some links to some other of my ice cream flavours. Once you have the base down pact you can make any flavour you want. Here it is…
No Churn Coffee Ice Cream With Chocolate Swirls!!

Cream Base
- 2 cups of heavy whipping cream
- 1 can of sweetened Condensed Milk 14 oz
- 1 Tbsp of vanilla extract
Flavour Base
- 2 – 3 Tbsp of instant coffee – I use 3 because I like the coffee to be strong
- 2 Tbsp of Kahlua – I think other liquors would be nice too like maybe Frangelico or Baileys
Chocolate Fudge Swirls
Now, because I can’t eat anything hard (and really I should not be eating ice cream) I make sure everything I get my super duper Aunt Paul to make is something I can swallow. You don’t have to do this step if you want. You could throw in some chocolate chips or maybe some chocolate covered coffee beans! Yummy! Either way it will be great!
- 2 Tbsp. of unsalted butter
- 2/3 cup of heavy or whipping cream
- 1/2 cup of light corn syrup, golden syrup or honey
- 1/4 cup of packed dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp. of fine or table sea salt
- 6 ounces of semi or bittersweet chocolate, chopped, or 1 cup of semi or bittersweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract
Okay, here’s how you make your ice cream…
- Make the fudge sauce ahead of time. Combine the butter, cream, sweeteners, cocoa, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Simmer on low, stirring, for 3 to 5 more minutes after everything has melted, then remove from heat and stir in chopped chocolate or chocolate chips. Stir in vanilla. It’s now ready to ladle over ice cream, although it thickens more as it begins to cool, so you could also wait for 15 to 20 minutes before doing so, if it’s not too unbearable. Pour leftovers into a jar or jars and refrigerate. Hot fudge sauce keeps chilled in the fridge at least a month and often two, although it’s rare it lasts that long.
- In a medium bowl, pour your Sweetened Condensed Milk, vanilla extract, instant coffee and Kahlua (if using) and mix until the coffee dissolves into your condensed milk. Set aside for now.
- In a large bowl, whip your 2 cups of whipping cream. You can use a stand mixer or a handheld mixer. Whip until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold your condensed milk mixture into the whipping cream. Do not over mix.
- In an airtight freezer safe container, spoon 1/3 of the cream mixture into the bottom. Place dollops of the cooled fudge sauce over the cream mixture. Proceed like this until you end with fudge sauce.
- Using a butter knife, swirl the sauces through the cream mixture. Cover and freeze for at least 4 hours before serving.
I hope you enjoy my ice cream! Here are a few others that we have made and loved!

Wow! That long post made up for the long absence! What are you using for the family tree stuff? I would love to know more about what you are finding. Those stories sound both terrible and interesting.

I’m on My Heritage. Aren’t you a member of my family tree? We will have to fix that if you are not. I use all kinds of sources tracing the branches down. Those two things were pretty distant from us. Like we could easily have married them and not even known we were somehow related. Let me know if you need an invite for the tree. xo
